Farmington River Plein Air

It has been beautiful here this week and I finally got outside to paint. I have very little experience as a plain air artist. I find it very intimidating. However, I would love to be a confident artist, the kind who goes on a walk and comes back with three paintings, several studies and hundreds of photos. So…I got out there to give it a try.

I enjoyed being outside, met a kayaker and several very friendly dogs. I learned you have to have a dark dark, kinda dark just won’t do. I also learned not to forget hand wipes! The painting leaves much to be desired, but the experience was positive. I will still have to talk myself into it, but I will go again.

When I got home I painted the scene from memory (almost completely) and reference photos I took while onsite. I am in love with this painting!

Green

My first painting on Strathmore pastel paper coated with Liquitex clear gesso. It has a great texture for pastels, as glorious as sandpaper without the risk of wearing off ones finger prints!

I achieved a lot of depth in this painting and also the overall green feeling of the lighting Wednesday afternoon. Still need to practice layering pastels and using darks effectively.
